LAS VEGAS – Poker, once nearly muscled off casino floors by gimmicky table games and flashy slot machines, is hotter than ever in Las Vegas, thanks to the game’s popularity on television.
Now, the Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino will try to build on those winnings by staging The Real Deal!, an audience-participation show, in its Venetian Showroom, starting Oct. 14.
The show will combine the elements of a game show with comedy and celebrities, all revolving around the now-familiar poker game of Texas Hold ‘Em. Since this is Las Vegas, there will be prizes, including the long-shot possibility for an audience member to win $1 million.

In his daily announcement about his lack of a plan for the upcoming season, free-agent centre Mats Sundin said yesterday he will not decide his future until after the puck drops on the 2008-09 campaign.
In the meantime, you may be able to catch up with him playing online poker.

DUBLIN HAS been named the best poker-playing city in Europe, according to the game’s biggest-selling magazine.
Bluff Europe chose Dublin for the title ahead of last year’s winner, London. Amsterdam, Vienna and Barcelona filled the remaining top five slots.
Bluff cited the proliferation of card rooms such as the Fitzwilliam, Sporting Emporium and Silks; the success of the Irish Poker Open; and the many grassroots games as proof of Dublin’s quality as a poker destination.
The choice did not go down well in London, which has the largest poker scene in Europe.

Titan Poker fielded 17 talented poker players from around the world at the Asian Poker Tour Macau; three of them finished in the money.
(PRWEB) September 2, 2008 — Playing on behalf of popular online poker room Titan Poker, Spanish poker champion Julio Diaz finished in fifth place at the Asian Poker Tour (APT) tournament, which took place this week in Macau.
Diaz went home with a cash prize of $514,600 Hong Kong Dollars after he outlasted professional poker players such as Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Kenny Tran and Liz Lieu to reach the final table.

Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) — U.S. poker players have anted up for another high-stakes game — lobbying.
Trying to overturn a 2006 U.S. ban on online poker, gamblers have started a lobbying group, established a political action committee, and promoted their effort to politicians by holding poker tournaments at the Republican and Democratic nominating conventions.
“Up until this point, the minority of the public that is anti-gambling has yelled louder,” professional poker player Andy Bloch said. “We’re trying to change that.”
The Poker Players Alliance, which claims 1 million members, has invited lawmakers and celebrities to a charity tournament Sept. 3 in Minneapolis, across the Mississippi River from St. Paul, where Republicans are meeting to formally nominate John McCain for president.
